Websites consume a lot of energy. Behind every page load sits an infrastructure of computer servers, data centres and industrial-scale cooling systems that demand far more electricity than most people realise.
“Data centres are energy-intensive operations, consuming between 10 and 50 times more electricity per square metre than a typical commercial building.”
Building efficiently from the ground up
We’ve always been mindful of the environmental impact of our work. A key part of that is how we build websites.
Performance and optimisation are priorities for us. A lean, fast-loading website has the double advantage of providing both a better user experience and also requiring fewer resources to deliver each page. In practical terms, that means less data transfer, less processing power, and lower overall energy usage.
We also take a considered approach to the hardware we use internally, favouring devices with proven longevity and maintaining, repairing, and reusing equipment wherever possible. For example, the phone pictured here has been in continuous use for nearly five years, with multiple repairs along the way.

Practical steps we’re taking
Sustainability is an ongoing process. With that in mind, we’ve introduced two measures that meaningfully reduce the environmental impact of our work.
One tree planted for every project
Thanks to Tree-Nation, we now plant a tree for every project we complete. Once a project is delivered, we fund the planting of a tree within a verified reforestation project.
These projects span multiple regions worldwide and aim to restore ecosystems, combat deforestation, and support local communities.
Hosting powered by renewable energy
In addition, all websites we host are powered by 100% renewable energy. This means the data centres used for both our own website and our clients’ sites source their electricity from renewable energy providers.
For clients, this is built into our hosting and maintenance services with no additional setup or decision-making required.
Why this matters to our clients
We’ve found that environmental responsibility is an important consideration for many of the businesses we work with. By integrating sustainable practices into how we operate, we remove friction for clients who want their digital presence to align with their values.
Crucially, this doesn’t mean making compromises. Performance, reliability and long-term maintainability are just as important, and sit firmly alongside our sustainable practices.
A realistic approach to sustainability
This isn’t mission accomplished. Tree planting and renewable-powered hosting help lessen our environmental impact but they don’t eliminate it entirely. The technology sector remains a significant contributor to global emissions, and meaningful change requires continuous inmprovment.
We see this as part of an ongoing commitment and will continue to make further improvements where possible.
Doing things properly
Our environmental responsibility is closely tied to how we approach our work more broadly.
That means:
- Building efficient, performance-focused websites
- Prioritising longevity and maintainability
- Avoiding unnecessary rebuilds and wasted resources
It is our view that sustainability is not a separate afterthought but is part of doing things conscientiously and properly.
Looking ahead
We’ll continue to look for ways to reduce our environmental impact as technologies and best practices evolve. Where improvements can be made, we’ll make them.
If you’re looking for a website partner that takes a thoughtful, long-term approach to both performance and sustainability, we’d be glad to hear from you.
